INTERNET: a post primer

So normally a primer goes up front to explain a few things and make sure that everyone is on the same page in terms of context. As this series explained everything as it went, we felt a primer was not really necessary – but maybe a post primer is!?

So what actually is the Internet?

It is simply a large group of computer like devices capable of connecting and communicating with each other. It is a network – the same way that radio or television is transmitted over a network.

The Internet hosts a bunch of applications like email, file transfer, voice and the widely used world wide web – this is usually the mix up, people think that the web is the Internet, but that is like saying your smartphone can only make phone calls.

Why should you listen to us?

  • Operating secure, anonymous and private services online since 2006
  • Professionally been working in the network, software and infrastructure world since 2000
  • Working mainly across finance and defence, but all over the globe

Working with Networking and Internet technologies lets us see first hand what is capable today and what will be within the art of possibility tomorrow.

Why did we write this series?

Most people don’t realise or understand why they should care about the information they provide online and hard to demonstrate the power of combining and processing all the collected data about someone.

Think about the log of connected WiFi networks on your phone – just a list of network names and times – but this list can easily be used to work out someone’s daily routine based purely on the different WiFi networks you have connected to recently. Just that list gives a decent understanding of the flows of movement you do in a given period.

Remember: if the service is free – you are the product!

In time we will be back with deeper dives into online security, privacy and anonymity…
